I'm running two 4K displays through it in addition to the Retina display on my 2017 MacBook Pro laptop (one Thunderbolt 3 cord from the laptop to the dock, then Thunderbolt 3 to the first monitor, and a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable to the second monitor).
I'm using every single port except for the Firewire 800 and digital audio ports. I really like the fact that this dock indicates exactly what each port is with specifics (ie: USB 3.1 Gen 1, or Firewire 800). While I was doing research on all the other docks, none of them told which protocols each port was using... you had to dig through their documentation to figure out what speeds you could expect from each port. Annoying! So glad OWC printed it next to each port.
I've even attached another small cheap $8 USB dock to one of the USB connections on this OWC dock to add a couple of extra USB connections for things that don't use a lot of bandwidth such as a printer, scanner, etc.)
I was originally concerned that the 65W power supply through the Thunderbolt 3 connection would not be enough seeing as how the Apple charger is 87W, but I haven't had a problem yet. Granted, I haven't really done much heavy processing for prolonged periods yet, but my laptop is almost always at 98-100% power when I'm using it normally.
Stop wondering if this is worth it. Just buy it already. You will thank me later. There is nothing that even comes close to what this dock does. Premium product for not much more than the other (inferior) docks. Yes, it is totally worth it. Thank you OWC for making such a great product.
I've not tested the audio quality of the headphone jack, but it's probably good.
I bought this for my 2 TB3 MacBook Pro. In my short time with it, most of the functionality is there. All 5 USB 3 ports work so I'm able to connect my devices. The TB3 out works with my USB C monitor and the mini DP port works with a converter for my HDMI second monitor. Ethernet works. SD reader works. It's nice to have all of these ports over one connection to my laptop. It even matches the overall look of the laptop (mostly. The space gray is great. I'd prefer something other than gloss black on the top though. shows dust and fingerprints really easily)
However, there are definitely some serious quality control issues. The first one I ordered had coil whine. One reason I bought this was to free up a port for a better audio interface which I bought for the quieter outputs. Not much good if my dock is whining louder than the old one's outputs anyway.
The next I bought had a noisy headphone out. I just want to get to work and the functionality I need is there so I won't be returning this one. I'll just be using an audio interface when it arrives instead of the dock's audio.
Be sure to thoroughly test your unit if you buy one and be prepared to order a replacement. When these work, they're pretty attractive and have all the ports I could imagine wanting in a dock. But they just don't always work.
Original review: Great dock so far for my 15-inch, 2017 MacBook Pro with Touchbar. Works with my external USB drive and mouse, Ethernet, and drives my Apple LED Cinema Display through the Mini DisplayPort. All very rock solid. Charges the computer as well. I think it's the most versatile Thunderbolt 3 dock and best value for the money in this product type. The space gray matches the computer well.
To have things working do the next steps:
1. Disconnect power from the box.
2. Open the MBP lid, log in.
3. connect power to the dock.
4. connect the dock and the laptop
5. unlug and re-plug ethernet.
6. close the lid and work.
Top reviews from other countries
I use it at the office every day and am very pleased with it. It has many options for hooking up external devices (Ethernet cable, 4K Monitor attached via USB-C and USB-sticks or backup drives attached via USB 2/3.
The only aspect I would like to see improved is the power-supply to the MacBook Pro. Whenever I attach the laptop to the dock, it immediately charges the battery. This is truly suboptimal for optimal battery life.
If a future version of the dock would provide a switch for turning the charging functionality on/off, then the dock would be perfect!!!
SD, USB 3.0 e spdif per me hanno funzionato out of the box.
