Apple Buys Faceshift, a Face Motion-Capture Company

In a surprising news today, Apple has acquired Faceshift, a face motion-capture company that was previously involved in real-time capture for television content. They were also working on a plugin that could be used to animate a computer generated avatar for online chat, or Skype conversation.

For what purpose would Apple buy such a company? Apple does not seem to be interested in game development, but perhaps a virtual chat person when making FaceTime support call? Possible. Or simply a fun avatar like for FaceTime like Snapchat and it’s crazy animations?

This is what Apple said, officially.

“Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”

As usual ;)
